Hands on Nashville has put out a special request asking for volunteers to help with a home devastated by the flood in Hendersonville. The work project will take place this Saturday, August 21st. New Volunteer Opportunities

Hands on Nashville and St. Luke's Community House are both asking for volunteers for projects that they are working on this weekend.

Hands on Nashville is looking for help sorting food at Second Harvest Food Bank as well as rebuilding projects. To learn more about the projects and/or to sign up go to: hon.org and look under "Project Calendar".

St. Luke's Community House is having their Second Saturday Work Day this Saturday, August 14th. Meet at St. Luke's (5601 NY Avenue) at 8 am if you are interested in helping out. This is a community that was particularly hard hit by the recent floods and they are requesting help from volunteers particularly in the next few weeks. Thank you from Kingston Springs Elementary

During this year's Vacation Bible School, children were asked to bring supplies for teachers whose classrooms were destroyed during the recent flooding at Kingston Springs Elementary. Kingston Springs Elementary, located in Cheatham County, sustained substantial damage during the May flood.

The collected supplies were delivered this past week to the Cheatham Board of Education who will forward the supplies to Kingston Springs Elementary. They were thrilled by the very generous donation and grateful to all that donated the supplies!

St. Luke's is still in need of donations!

We delivered another van full of food this afternoon to St. Luke's and they were very grateful! Thank you to all who have donated food items and we ask that you continue to consider our neighbors in need as you do your grocery shopping. They also informed us that they are especially in need of toilet tissue right now. We will continue to deliver your donated items on a weekly basis to ensure that they get quickly into the hands that need them the most!

Food Donations Still Needed

Even though it has now been a few weeks since the flooding in Nashville, there are communities that are and will continue to be in a great deal of need for weeks, months and even possibly years to come. Please continue to bring in your non-perishable food items and we will make sure that they are quickly delivered to St. Luke's Community House in West Nashville.

It has been almost 4 weeks since the flood and our city is moving from the recovery to the rebuilding phase where we will expect to be for some time. Please stay tuned for ways that you can assist in this next phase.

Thank you for all of you that have lent a helping hand; every little bit does make a difference to those who have lost so much!

Urgent Volunteer Needs for Graceworks

Graceworks is in great need of volunteers tomorrow (Saturday) and Tuesday between 9 am and 4 pm. They need help moving furniture at Graceworks, located at 104 Southeast Parkway in Franklin. If you are able to help out, please send them an e-mail to sign up at volunteer@graceworksministries.net.

They are also in need of new sheets and towels, new small appliances (such as toasters, coffee makers, hand mixers, etc.), new dish sets and flatware, and new pots and pans. Items can be dropped off at Good Shepherd and we will make sure that they are delivered to Graceworks to those who need them. (They are requesting donations of new items only at this time.)

Hi everyone,

St. Luke's Community House is again requesting help for this weekend. The following is from Stephanie Lee from St. Luke's:

St. Luke's will be the site for one of six "Rebuild Clinics" in Nashville, this Saturday, May 22, hosted by The Nashville Housing Trust Fund. The Trust Fund specifically asked if some of our West Nashville Partnership volunteers could assist the residents in getting checked in and properly directed to the support staff who will be there to answer rebuilding related questions.

You would be assisting in receiving the residents, getting them signed up for assistance, and directing them to the proper person for the assistance.

At this time, it looks like there will be a morning and afternoon shift, with lunch around noon.

Helping out with St. Luke's this Saturday

Thank you to all who have given of their time by helping to clear debris from the homes of flood survivors as well as to the many of you who have brought non-perishable food items to be delivered to St. Luke's Community House located in West Nashville. We are working to deliver the items as quickly as possible to help the many families in that community that were affected by the storm. Please continue to bring non-perishable food items (especially ready to eat foods such as peanut butter, tuna and canned fruit) and we will ensure that they are quickly delivered to St. Luke's.

As many of you know, Good Shepherd sponsors volunteers to work the first Saturday of each month during the summer to help low income families in the West Nashville area with home projects. With the recent flooding, St Luke’s is sponsoring a volunteer work day this Saturday,
so we are looking for Rams and other members of our Church who want to help.

So, what we are asking is for you, your family and your friends to volunteer to help. We will meet this Saturday at our church parking lot at 7:30. We’ll carpool over and start work at 8:00 and be finished by 12:00. If you could let Bob Hilmer know if you can make it that would be great.

New Opportunities to Help!

Hi everyone,

We are going to be taking a group to go help out in Antioch tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. We will meet at the church at 2:30 pm and return early evening. This is a project organized by Hands on Nashville and I have already been in contact with the project coordinator. In order to participate, you will need to register through the Hands on Nashville site (www.hon.org). Simply go to the site, click on "View a Calendar of Current Flood Volunteer Opportunities", find May 13th and click on "Flood Cleanup Volunteer Reception Center", and finally click on the 3rd project down located in Antioch (37013). Even though the project says from 10 am until 7 pm, they need lots of help and would welcome us coming in the afternoon!

Once you're registered with Hands on Nashville, you can assist with any of their volunteer activities! If you have trouble with registration, please feel free to contact me! Also, there are other opportunities to assist with St. Luke's Community located in West Nashville. This is a community we regularly work with and their residents were hit particularly hard. They will have 2 available shifts in which to help out this Saturday May 15th, from 8 am until noon or from 10 am until 2 pm.

Thank you to all who have already brought by canned and non-perishable food. Foods that can be quickly prepared without having having to be cooked (such as tuna or peanut butter) are particularly helpful. St. Luke's is especially in need right now and we are doing our best to deliver the food as quickly as it comes in!

Clearing Debris in East Nashville

Yesterday 8 of us headed to East Nashville to sort out belongings and clean out debris from a home in East Nashville. While most of the home had already been cleared of its contents, the garage was still full and had to been cleaned out in order for the rebuilding phase to begin. The floodwaters had swelled a creek behind the home causing a surge of water 6' high that filled the home as well as neighboring homes.

It is quite a humbling experience to drive down the streets of neighborhoods that are filled with the former contents of people's homes. But it is also amazing to behold the generosity of so many people that willing to lend a hand in a time of need.

We will continue to keep you apprised of other opportunities in which to lend a helping hand. If you know of anyone in need of help, please let us know!

In the mean time, we are collecting non-perishable food items as well as household goods to be delivered to St. Luke's community house in West Nashville. Their community, while always in need, was particularly hard hit in last weekend's storms.

In addition, there is a need of summer clothing for 2 children: girl- pants size 12, shirt size 8-10 and shoes size 4 1/2 and a boy- pants size 12, shirt size 10-12 and shoes size 5 1/2. Donations can be left in Herlong Hall and labeled if possible.

Good Shepherd's Response to the Flooding in our Community

It's hard to believe the events that have transpired in our community regarding the record breaking rainfall and subsequent flooding that occurred last weekend in Middle Tennessee. Several in our community have suffered minor flooding but for the most part we have survived the storms with little damage. As we all know, many in the larger Nashville area have suffered devastating losses and Randy, Cynthia and I have all been amazed at the overwhelming desire of our Good Shepherd community to want to reach out to our neighbors in need.

Without a doubt, the needs of our community will continue for weeks and even months, but as a preliminary response we offer the following ways in which to be involved:

Donating Food, Supplies, or Money

We will be collecting food and other nonperishable items for at least the next 4 weeks, to be delivered to St. Luke's and to Graceworks, beginning this Sunday.

If you wish to donate financially, checks can be made out to Good Shepherd with Flood Relief in the memo line, and we will forward the funds to organizations such as St. Luke's and Graceworks who are and who will continue to be in need.

Volunteer Your Time and Strength

Tomorrow, Thursday, a work team is gathering at Good Shepherd at 2:30pm to head to East Nashville for clean up work. If you are willing and able, please contact Holly to learn how to prepare/what to bring eg work gloves, etc. Other teams will be going later, let Holly know if you are interested.

The West Nashville Community Development Fellowship will be working (most likely) in the Richland Creek this Saturday May 8th and is in need of volunteers willing to assist with cleanup.
